Lipari, the ancient Greek Meligunis, with its 37.6 sq km of surface is the largest island of the Aeolian archipelago with about 10,000 residents. There are five suburbs: Lipari, Acquacalda, Canneto, Pianoconte and Quattropani, connected to the town of Lipari by the scenic road that runs along the island.
The highest peak is Mount Chirica: its 602 meters are an excellent observation point for the whole archipelago.
The Malvasia wine production is renowned. A tour of the island by taxi or moped to discover the breathtaking views and wine tasting is highly recommended.
The Aeolian Islands are volcanic creatures forged by the active presence of the four elements: air, water, earth and fire. Even today we can see the phenomena of volcanism. These phenomena, pretty much fumarolic activity and hot springs, are mainly located on the western side of the island.
