Discover Lipari
The island of Lipari is the largest of the Aeolian archipelago with an important historical heritage. As matter of fact it was known as the Greek Meligunis. Its surface is 37.6 square kilometers and there are about 10,000 residents, number that grows in the summer. It is a volcanic island and the oldest rocks date back about 225,000 years ago. Today there are still fumarolic activities and hot springs mostly located on the west coast of the island. Lipari has five main suburbs: Lipari, Canneto, Acquacalda, Pianoconte and Quattropani. These are are all connected by a scenic road that runs along the island. An absolute must is the island tour by taxi or by moped to admire the breathtaking views towards the other sisters from different points of the island.
The beaches are wonderful. The coast starts from Canneto, the largest seaside hotel, where you can enjoy the free beaches or the beach bars in tranquility. If you keep going to north towards Acquacalda and you will pass through the famous Pomice quarries where in the past the pumice stone was extracted. Lipari is very famous for its White Beaches created by the residues of the pumice. The sea is so clear with a color that goes from turquoise to deep blue. Once you got to Acquacalda you can enjoy the serenity of the place and admire from the beach the magnificent sunset with the view of the island of Salina.
Among the historical and architectural beauties to visit are the castle of Lipari in the center with the ancient Benedictine monastery from the Norman period, the cathedral from the 13th century , the acropolis, the remains of the graves of the Greco-Roman age and the Archaeological Museum, the second in Europe; in Marina Corta is really interesting the church of Purgatory from the thirteenth century and Murals painted by famous local artists.
Recommended is a walk to the historic center. Very characteristic are the picturesque alleys.
Enjoy an happy hour with live music and experience the Aeolian lifestyle that will make your holiday unforgettable.
